INTRODUCTION
The most important part of any Land Rover is the chassis, an enormously strong box-section construction which, although resisting the passage of time well, inevitably falls victim to rust över the years. Original chassis are not galvanised, although some replacements are.
The chassis must be inspected very carefully. Look fırst for dents and gouges caused by contact with rocks off road. The odd dent is to be expected, especially on older models, but lots of them point to a very hard life. Damage like this turns readily to rust, so look for corrosion or, much worse, evidence of filler, which is totally unacceptable. Repair sections or plates welded into position are okay, but bear in mind that if a chassis has got to the point where entire sections have already been repaired, a full replacement will not be too far away. And that’s a big, expensive job.
The rear of the chassis can be more pıone to corrosion than the front, while the rear crossmember frequently rusts before the main chassis rails. This is a principal load bearing section, and takes ali the stresses of towing, so must be in perfect order. Outriggers, too, rust quite readily, especially those at the bulkhead.
From the point of view of the corrosion inspection, the bulkhead can be included with the chassis. Although it is more than likely that any serious rust will be restricted to the footwell area, which is relatively easy to repair, it is possible that the bulkhead itself is corroded on very early vehicles. Check from inside the cab and from beneath and above the engine bay. Bulkhead replacement is a majör exercise.
